Chapter 157 Human Leaders Are Blind to the Truth (10)
The next morning
After traveling for a long time, the team was very close to the research center.
On the way, Shi Qi used his mental power more than once to sense whether there were any high-level zombies nearby. Fortunately, as he got closer, he was still able to sense the presence of that guy.
It seems this level seven zombie is quite arrogant.
Soon, they arrived at the main entrance of the research center. Unlike other places where there were scattered zombies, this place was eerily quiet, as if something was lurking in the shadows, waiting to kill them with a single blow.
Ling Wei said softly, "Isn't it a little too quiet here?"
Si Yan neither confirmed nor denied this, but simply said, "Everyone be careful. I'll go first, and Zhang Lie will bring up the rear."
Hearing his boss's instructions, Zhang Lie nodded and walked to the back of the group with practiced ease. Protected tightly by Si Yan, Shi Qi followed him into the research center.
Everyone had expected the research center to be messy or dusty; but to their surprise, it was spotless, as if it had been cleaned all along.
Zhang Lie: "Could it be... there are still survivors here?"
Jiang Weilan: "It's not impossible..." However, would there really be survivors who, under such circumstances, would still be in the mood to clean such a large research center?
Upon seeing such an unusual place, no one dared to make a sound. Instead, they gathered together and quietly made their way toward the laboratory where Jiang Weilan had mentioned, where the plants were kept.
"This is it." Jiang Weilan looked at the closed door in front of her and said with some surprise.
Si Yan tried pressing the button next to the door, but the door didn't budge: "Looks like this door isn't powered..." As he spoke, he placed his hand on the button again, and a flash of electricity appeared, and the door opened successfully!
As he watched the door slowly open, Shi Qi frowned slightly. He had a small question in his mind, but he wasn't sure if he should ask it...
Seeing him frown, Si Yan subconsciously asked, "What's wrong?" "Do you know the circuit layout of this kind of door?" Shi Qi asked, voicing his small question.
Si Yan immediately understood why he was frowning, and suddenly found the person in front of him rather cute, so he chuckled and explained, "I don't know, I just connected all the electricity here along the door..." He paused for a moment, and then added, "Including the main power."
"Si Yan's favorable impression +5"
"So that's how it's solved?" Shi Ting nodded, looking enlightened. How to put it? Pretty crude, huh? But maybe he'd been too influenced by his studies in his previous world; even looking at an electric door, he had to think about electrical circuits.
Once the doors were almost fully open, Jiang Weilan rushed inside, seemingly eager to find the plant strains that could help develop a vaccine. This behavior was quite in line with his "science-loving" persona.
However, after searching the entire laboratory, from petri dishes to potting soil, he still couldn't find the plant he was looking for.
Seeing him searching everywhere, Si Yan asked, "Dr. Jiang, what kind of plant are you looking for? We can help you find it."
Jiang Weilan, who was initially a little impatient, calmed down slightly upon hearing his question: "The leaves of this plant are sword-shaped, and apart from the dark red tips, the rest are bright green. The characteristics are very obvious, so it shouldn't be hard to find..."
Whether we can find it or not, we'll only know after we search. After he finished speaking, everyone dispersed and began searching carefully in the laboratory. Unfortunately, they ultimately couldn't find the plant he described.
Ye Xin: "Doctor, don't worry, maybe she was taken to another lab?"
Jiang Weilan nodded. He knew very well that what Ye Xin said was already the best-case scenario, and that was the only way he could think of it.
Si Yan: "Then let's look elsewhere... Do you know where this plant might be stored?" he asked Jiang Weilan.
Jiang Weilan pondered for a moment, then muttered to herself, "Perhaps it's there..." She looked at everyone and said, "Come with me, it might be hidden underground in the research center."
The group followed Jiang Weilan to an elevator hidden among the bookshelves. Just as they were about to ask Si Yan to turn it on, Jiang Weilan discovered that the elevator was already powered on.
Could it be that the survivors are down here? Everyone thought of this possibility at the same time and silently followed Jiang Weilan into the elevator.
Zhang Lie suddenly asked, "By the way, besides this elevator, is there no staircase to go down?"
Jiang Weilan glanced at him but didn't say anything. Soon, Zhang Lie knew the reason—the elevator had been running for almost two minutes without stopping. When he first came in, he only saw one button, so he subconsciously thought that the basement level should be shallow, but he didn't expect it to be so deep.
Standing in the descending elevator, Si Yan couldn't help but ponder: what kind of situation could lead a research center to build such a deep underground space? In terms of depth, Si Yan could only think of two possibilities: one was to hide something, and the other was—a shelter.
But such a shelter can't be built after the apocalypse. But if it were built before the apocalypse... who would build such a shelter before the apocalypse?
I have a feeling that Jiang Weilan knows something, or perhaps... he's deliberately hiding something...
"Fate Value -5"
Nearly a minute later, the elevator finally stopped, and as the elevator doors slowly opened, an unprecedented scene appeared before them.
Along a dimly lit, narrow corridor stood two neat rows of zombies of varying appearances. At the far end of the corridor stood a slender man wearing gold-rimmed glasses and a white lab coat typical of researchers. Perhaps due to the distance, only this zombie could see his inhuman, scarlet eyes.
Although he looked almost identical to a human to others, the zombies standing on either side of him were clearly under his control, so it was not hard to guess that he was a high-level zombie.
The man glanced briefly at the people in the elevator, then slightly curled his lips, placed one hand on his chest, and gave a very gentlemanly bow: "Welcome, everyone. I hope you enjoy the welcome ceremony I have arranged for you."
After he finished speaking, Shi Qi could clearly see that the faint smile on the man's face suddenly widened and became full of malice.
