Chapter 332 A Stage of Victory
Chapter 332 A Stage of Victory
I gripped my phone tightly, listening to Song Dehai's hurried and anxious voice. The background noise on the other end was chaotic, like a hospital corridor.
"A mysterious person?" I frowned and walked to the window to look down.
"Dad, are you sure this isn't a quack? People are desperate and will try anything. We can't afford to make any more mistakes."
On the other end of the phone, Song Dehai tried to lower his voice, his breathing slightly uneven. "It's still unclear, it doesn't sound like it... He was quite specific, and he even mentioned some kind of gene editing research project abroad, but I didn't quite understand. I plan to talk to him first and ask him to clarify things. But he sounded very confident, saying he could help us solve all the problems."
All the questions? That's quite an arrogance. I thought to myself, there's no such thing as a free lunch. But then I remembered, Little Tian is still lying in the hospital.
"What does he want?" I asked directly.
“It hasn’t been mentioned yet,” Song Dehai’s voice was even lower. “They just said they’d meet first to see if we were sincere. We’ve arranged it for tomorrow afternoon at a rather secluded teahouse.”
"Are you going alone?" I was a little worried. "How about I go with you?"
“No need,” he quickly refused. “They specifically asked for me alone. Don’t worry, I have men following me from a distance. Besides, what could possibly happen in broad daylight?”
"Dad," I said softly, as if afraid of disturbing something, "you have to be careful and keep your eyes open. Don't let those unreliable people fool you. Keep all the recordings and chat logs. Remember what kind of people they are, what they look like."
Song Dehai hummed in agreement twice on the other end of the line. "I know, don't worry, I know what I'm doing. As long as there's even a sliver of hope, we have to try. For the sake of the child..."
I could sense his sense of having no other choice, yet grasping at straws.
"Okay, that's all for now. Let me know if you have any updates. Feel free to contact me anytime." He then hung up the phone.
I gave a bitter smile to myself, feeling that bone marrow matching had become a matter of luck.
Thinking of that tiny figure on the hospital bed, that little Tian suffering from leukemia, the last bit of courage in my heart seemed to be nudged by something, and I was fully revived.
Before I knew it, I wandered over to the refrigerator, found a few cans of beer, and without even taking a glass, tilted my head back and gulped down a few mouthfuls.
The cool liquid slid down his throat, carrying a bitter, malty taste. He sat alone on the sofa, lit another cigarette, and waited quietly for her triumphant return, the smoke swirling around him.
Just then, there was a few soft knocks on the door, not in a hurry. I was about to get up to open the door when the lock clicked open by itself.
Song Yafei is back.
Surprisingly, he showed no signs of fatigue from his journey. Instead, his eyes sparkled, as if he had just won a tough battle, or perhaps he was caught up in some important decision-making process, weighing his options repeatedly.
She just stood there and glanced at me.
"Yu Zhe won't be able to complete his little scheme this time." She announced as soon as she entered the room, her voice not loud, but with a sense of certainty.
Then he casually tossed his bag onto the entryway cabinet, his movements quite swift. "The chain of evidence is locked up. All those old grievances have been dug up this time. He'll be in jail for a while."
I stared at her, trying to catch some emotion on her face other than victory.
"How did he do that?" My voice was a little hoarse, probably from smoking too much and taking a few gulps of beer. I sat up straighter, leaning back against the soft cushions of the sofa. "He's so cunning, he kept his tail hidden very well."
"What else can we do? Let Assistant Luo dig it up." She walked over slowly, holding a few sheets of paper in her hand.
"The information was filtered and cross-verified layer by layer. He thought his plan was foolproof, but it was full of loopholes. The specific details were finalized by working overtime with the team last night." She casually placed the file on the coffee table, the papers rustling slightly. "Assistant Luo found a skilled hacker who directly hacked into several of his encrypted hard drives."
"Great job, well done." I smirked. "Impressive, I truly admire you."
She ignored my tone, sat down on the single sofa opposite me, and leaned forward slightly. "His shady dealings are enough to get him into serious trouble. He thinks he can fight us? He's too green."
I squinted at the woman in front of me. She was always like this: confident, even a little aggressive.
Regardless of the conflicts, misunderstandings, or things that may never be resolved between us in the past, at least tonight we are comrades on the same front in dealing with external enemies. It feels a little strange, but it's alright.
"Tian," she suddenly called my name, her voice surprisingly softer, and a hint of barely perceptible excitement seemed to flash in her eyes, perhaps because of the lighting.
"Now that Yu Zhe's matter is settled, I've made up my mind to work with you to do everything we can to save Xiao Xiaotian, and while we're looking for a match, we'll have another child."
This doesn't sound like something she would say. I paused, forgetting to put down the beer can I was holding. "What do you mean?"
“What I mean is,” she looked at me, her gaze direct this time, “I won’t be as indecisive as before. I’m willing to do anything for Xiaoxiaotian. I will do my best.”
Her voice trailed off, almost disappearing into the faint rumble of traffic outside the window.
“Of course,” I paused, lowering my voice, “I’m willing to do anything for Xiaoxiaotian. This is originally a matter between the two of us.”
I picked up the nearly empty beer can, but didn't drink it; I just gazed out the window at the city lights. Thousands of lights shone brilliantly, seemingly endless, but not a single one offered us true peace. "I hope you're serious this time."
She didn't say anything, just nodded, then stood up. "I'm going to take a shower."
Watching her walk into the bedroom, I picked up the documents on the coffee table and flipped through them. They were all photocopies of financial statements and transfer records, with densely packed numbers that made my head spin.
There's still a long way to go, and Song Yafei and I have many steps to take and many hurdles to overcome.
What is this tonight? A brief respite after a partial victory? I don't know.
Fortunately, the company has taken a step forward, though we don't know where that step will lead. I'm willing to walk this path with her, at least for the Song family, and for our children.
Song Yafei quickly finished showering and changed into her pajamas, looking very sexy from a distance.
"Come over as soon as you're done showering," she said, her loose hair adding a touch of tenderness.
I understood what she meant. "Okay, I'll be right there!" I said with a smile.
I didn't mention Xiaotian's matching, I just wanted to enjoy this night that belonged only to the two of us. But at this moment, deep down, there was a faint hope that maybe she could really get pregnant this time.
The future remains uncertain, but at least tonight, this night sky, illuminated by our shared troubles and a tiny bit of common goal, belongs to us for the time being.
After taking a shower, I went into the bedroom, and Song Yafei was looking at me tenderly, with a beauty unlike any I'd seen before, which captivated me completely.
I sat on the edge of the bed, lifted her chin, and kissed her deeply.
