Chapter 29 No Water Shortage
Chapter 29 No Water Shortage
The train stopped, and Zuli and two others got off.
To the right of the train was a lake, and to the left were some low-lying weeds.
Sofia looked around and suddenly said to Su Li, "Train conductor, there are no individual trees here."
"Huh?" Su Li was taken aback. "Why are you bringing this up... wait a minute, we haven't seen a single tree yet?"
“There aren’t any. There are at least a dozen trees clustered together,” Sofia said simply. “And in the wild, most of them are balsa wood.”
“Baldwood?” Su Li murmured the name. “It sounds familiar.”
“It can grow 7 meters in a year,” Sofia added, then said, “Apart from large forests where oak trees are abundant, the other trees clustered in the wild are balsa wood. And they are generally only about 6 or 7 meters tall.”
Su Li's expression hardened. This information meant that "aside from the large forests, the trees outside are all about a year old. I haven't seen any that are two years old. To put it simply, the small, isolated groves outside can only grow for a year, and once that year is up, they will be destroyed."
"It seems the storm here is quite strong..."
Su Li surmised that a powerful storm occurs here every year, destroying a dozen or so groves of trees outside. Judging by the height of the balsa wood, it should be almost time.
Is it really such a coincidence that we all just happened to be in the storm period?
Su Li chuckled. "Isn't that obvious? System, you piece of trash."
"Same as always, go gather supplies. Sophia, go fetch water, fill our 5-ton water tank today. Ivan, same as always, be careful, search the surrounding area. I'm going to cut down trees further away."
"Sophia, take a look at the water. If it's normal lake water, then have Ivan make four planting boxes and plant the crops."
Su Li grabbed the axe and ran towards the forest. This was the most efficient way right now.
They only have 20 barrels, which one person can transport. Adding more people would only waste time, unless they get more barrels. But barrels require wood, and one barrel costs 10 pieces of wood, so getting more barrels would be a waste of resources.
Previously, more wooden barrels were needed to store water, but now with water storage tanks, wooden barrels are no longer needed.
A wooden barrel can hold 10 liters of water, so 20 barrels can hold 200 liters. The water tank has a capacity of 5 tons, or 5000 liters.
If you calculate it that way, Sofia would need to make 25 round trips, which is quite tiring.
Zurich ran for about 3 kilometers and came to the edge of the woods, then began to cut down trees.
It seems the trees here aren't oaks anymore. So no acorns have fallen, which is a bit of a disappointment for Zurich.
Su Li chopped down the tree, one stroke at a time, and soon he had felled one. He had chopped down over a hundred trees by now, making him quite a skilled worker.
Identify the wood, then in five strokes, you can cut down the tree.
It saves effort and also conserves the axe's durability.
After chopping for a while, it was 6 p.m. Zurich stopped and started, and had cut down a total of 31 trees before he couldn't chop any more.
Zuli returned to the vicinity of the train and found that Ivan had already started cooking.
I smelled it and realized it was the last serving of bird meat. I should eat it soon, or it will spoil.
"Brother Su, you're back." Ivan said excitedly when he saw him. "Wait a little longer, the food will be ready soon."
"Oh, thank you for your hard work." Su Li glanced at the meat in the pot and noticed some vegetables in it. "What are these vegetables?"
“I gathered these wild vegetables in the woods. I don’t know what they’re called, but they’re definitely edible. I’ve gathered and eaten them before,” Ivan said happily.
Su Li was touched. These two teammates were treasures. The little guy could even pick wild vegetables. No wonder they came from a hunter's family.
Su Li returned to the train, put down the wood she was carrying, and then discovered that the black iron storage box inside, which was specifically used to store food, had many more items.
Wild vegetables *7, Berries 20, Honeycomb 4, Hemostatic herbs *2
Wait a minute, honeycomb?
Su Li ran outside and shouted to Ivan, "Holy crap, kid, you got honeycomb!"
Ivan scratched his head sheepishly. "I found it in a tree hole. I lit a fire to drive the bees away, and then collected just a little bit. Collecting just a little bit won't drive the bees crazy."
Zuli then noticed that Ivan's face seemed a little swollen; he had been stung.
"How are you? Does it hurt?" Su Li asked with concern. "Don't do that again. We don't have any medicine. If you get stung badly, you'll just have to wait to die."
"It's not worth it for a little honey."
When Su Li said this, she truly meant it. Such a small amount of honey wasn't worth taking such a huge risk.
"Hehe, I have experience."
“Experience isn’t enough; those who drown are often the ones who can swim.” Su Li’s expression was serious. He knew that Ivan was so enthusiastic because he felt Ivan was a burden, but to be honest, this kid wasn’t a burden at all. He had already contributed value to the team.
"If you do that again, I'm going to hit you!"
After pointing and warning Ivan, Su Li turned around and saw a girl holding a bow, looking at her with a faint smile.
"?" Su Li was puzzled. "Where did you get the bow? Did you trade for the bowstring?"
“No, I made a bowstring myself.” Sophia shook her head and sat down by the campfire. “I won’t trade on my own.”
“…Impressive,” Su Li praised, glossing over the topic of the transaction.
Here, Ivan and Sophia are very mindful of Zuli's authority. For example, when they take something, they always tell Zuli first. They don't trade privately; they only trade through Zuli. They don't eat in private either. When they eat, Zuli eats first before they start eating.
This truly made Zu Li feel respected.
Therefore, Zuli became increasingly satisfied with these two people.
After dinner, Su Li took out mangoes and gave one to each person. "These mangoes the system gave us are already ripe. We can't let them sit for long, so let's eat them in the next couple of days."
"Oh, and remember to save the seeds. We can try planting them sometime. I love mangoes and watermelons the most."
After saying that, Su Li couldn't wait to peel the mango. Then she ate it with relish.
The siblings exchanged a glance, and then began to eat.
This is another reason why Su Li is satisfied with them: they are not pretentious. They eat whatever Su Li asks them to eat, and they don't make any excuses or flatter her.
He's just like a working-class person who's not good at socializing.
After finishing the mango, Su Li asked Sophia, "By the way, what did you use to make your bowstring?"
Sophie put down the half-eaten mango and said, "It's weeds. Weeds that the system dried. They're quite resilient. I used them to weave bowstrings and tried to make bows and arrows, and the system approved it."
"That's good. With bows and arrows, hunting will be much easier. If we catch any big prey, we can use sinew instead of bows and arrows. Grass isn't elastic enough, and bows aren't very powerful either."
Sophia shook her head. "Conductor, the bowstring doesn't need to be elastic, it just needs to be strong enough. The power of the bow comes from the bow arm."
"Oh, I see." Su Li suddenly realized.
After discussing bows and arrows, Su Li brought up the issue of water, asking, "How much water do you have stored? Is this water drinkable?"
Sofia continued, "The water tank is full. It's just ordinary lake water. After purification using the water purification device you made earlier, it's drinkable after boiling."
After saying that, he sent a screenshot to Su Li.
[Lake water: Ordinary lake water with some aquatic life; it is best not to drink it directly.]
This is good news; at least the water problem has been solved.
However, in survival games, as long as you don't encounter a world with water pollution, the problem of drinking water is actually relatively easy to solve.
Su Li quickly opened the trading interface and said, "While there aren't many people who have discovered the water source, let's hurry up and list a batch."
When Su Li opened the app, she found that someone had already listed the lake water and successfully driven down its price.
After calculating the profit, Su Li felt it wasn't very high, so she gave up the idea of making the deal.
Then he looked at Ivan, "Is the basic planting box finished?"
“It’s done, Su Ge.” Ivan also sent over a few screenshots. “I’ve already planted the crops.”
Zuli looked through the screenshots Ivan had sent.
Potatoes: mature in 6 days, and seed set 1 day after maturity.
Tomatoes: mature in 11 days, produce seeds 2 days after maturity, and can be harvested again every 4 days.
Cotton: It takes 10 days to mature, and seeds are formed 2 days after maturity.
Wheat: matures in 15 days, and seeds form 2 days after maturity.
Insufficient light and water will delay ripening and may even cause the plant to wither.
"Such rapid growth?" Su Li was overjoyed upon seeing this information. "It seems to be thanks to that earth element fragment."
This arrangement made the train space insufficient again. To ensure adequate lighting, Ivan placed all four planting boxes near the windows, but they still didn't get the required amount of sunlight.
At least it won't wither.
Zuli silently added the planting room to her memo.
After finishing her meal, Su Li ran back and continued cutting down trees, unwilling to give up for even a second.
Ivan kept pacing around, saying, "Such a large resource point, and not a single treasure chest? I think that's unlikely. I must have missed one."
Su Li didn't let him go far because he needed to keep watch that night. Around 8 o'clock, it would be time for him to go to sleep.
