Chapter 4 Assignment of Work
Chapter 4 Assignment of Work
But how did Tu Lin know that he was not yet an adult?
Lin Baiyan had some doubts, but now was clearly not the right time to ask.
He shook his head, putting the matter out of his mind for the time being.
Rabbit Forest didn't sense Lin Baiyan's discomfort; it just looked at Lin Baiyan expectantly: "Little one, do you still remember where you found the food?"
Alright, alright, he's just a cub. He's gained so many extra years of lifespan, he should be content.
He cleared his throat. "It's not far from the cave. There are many round spheres surrounded by thorns scattered on the ground. The flesh inside is edible."
Lin Baiyan didn't say that the thing was called a chestnut, probably because even if he did, the beastmen wouldn't know.
After listening to Lin Baiyan's description for a moment, Tu Lin knew what he was talking about. He was slightly surprised: "There's actually food in there?"
He had seen those thorny fruits elsewhere before, but because they were so prickly, the beastmen didn't collect them. They would even tell their companions to stay away from the thorny fruits, because getting pricked would cause bleeding.
Lin Baiyan nodded, "I've eaten the fruit from there before. It's delicious when cooked, and you can also eat it raw."
Rabbit Forest was somewhat pleased, but he did not immediately let the beastmen leave.
He turned to look at the orcs in the cave, "How many of you are willing to go out and gather with Cat White?"
The orcs in the cave lit up at the mention of gathering, as it was something they had always done. Several orcs chimed in, "Me, I'll go."
"I am coming too!"
"Count me in..."
The more lively sub-orcs immediately said they wanted to go out, and even the more shy ones quietly echoed their wishes.
Rabbit Forest looked at the beastmen in the cave. "All sub-beastmen, go to Bai's place. Male beastmen, come here. Old and injured beastmen, and cubs who are less than half my height, all stand in the middle."
Everyone obediently did as Rabbit Forest said. After the beastmen were divided into teams, Rabbit Forest looked at the beastmen who were divided into two groups in the cave.
"Why aren't you moving those wolf cubs?" Lin Baiyan saw seven or eight grayish wolf cubs huddled together in a corner at the very back of the cave. They didn't look very big.
The largest one of them warily watched its surroundings, protecting the fluffy wolf cubs behind it.
Upon hearing Lin Baiyan's voice, Tu Lin glanced over there, shook his head, and said, "Those are all Lang Cang's people. They usually only listen to Lang Cang."
Lin Baiyan nodded and did not force them to come over.
He glanced around the cave and counted sixty-five people. Adding Rabbit Forest, himself, and the male orc Wolf Cang who went out to hunt, there were a total of sixty-eight orcs.
There are so many people: twenty-three male orcs and sixteen sub-orcs.
There were more young cubs, a total of twenty, most of whom were orphans. Of course, those with parents wouldn't be abandoned so easily.
There were only nine old orcs.
Male orcs did not participate in gathering; they mostly took on the task of hunting.
Tu Lin was troubled about how to arrange for the beastmen to go out and find food. In his original tribe, he was just a small leader of a gathering team and didn't know how to arrange work.
Just then, a white wolf, over a meter tall, carrying a gray rabbit in its mouth, entered the cave.
As soon as he entered the cave, Lang Cang noticed the changes inside. He immediately transformed into human form and carried the lifeless rabbit in his hand.
Seeing the rabbit he was carrying, most of the orcs unconsciously swallowed hard.
Wolf Cang looked around and accurately located his fellow cubs hiding in a corner. His expressionless face relaxed slightly.
Lin Baiyan was startled by Lang Cang's beast form, thinking that some wild animal had followed the scent and crept into the cave. But Lang Cang then performed a magic trick on him, making him appear out of nowhere.
He subconsciously rubbed the kitten Xia in his arms a few more times.
"This wolf looks rather cold, and it didn't even warn me before transforming!" Lin Baiyan muttered to himself.
The man who walked in had short, black hair that slightly obscured his eyes, but it couldn't hide the sharpness in his pupils. He was tall and slender, with deep-set features and a wild, angular face, like a cold sword, extremely aggressive, alert, and full of defensiveness.
"What is it?" After confirming that all his clansmen were present, Lang Cang turned to look at Tu Lin, and inadvertently glanced at Lin Baiyan, who was holding the kitten Xia beside him.
When he first saw himself transform into human form, the orc stared wide-eyed at his round cat-like eyes, looking extremely surprised, and even a little scared.
Rabbit Forest breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that it was him. "You're finally back, Wolf Cang."
During their journey together over the past few days, Tu Lin noticed that Lang Cang was very perceptive and alert, correctly identifying directions many times. After fleeing the famine together, Tu Lin subconsciously asked for his opinion.
"The cub said it has found food. We have been in the cave for a long time and the ground cracks have not occurred again. I think everyone should be able to go out and look for food now."
Upon hearing Lin Baiyan's name, Lang Cang glanced at him and said in a deep voice, "Alright, I've patrolled the area and haven't found any danger yet."
After such a long and arduous migration, even the strongest warriors would succumb. Without meat to replenish their nutrition, the beastmen's physical strength and fighting ability would be greatly reduced.
Now, every single orc in the cave is emaciated and starving.
Upon hearing what Lang Cang said, the male beastmen all showed joy.
Since Lang Cang has said so, it must mean that they have reached a safe place.
During these days of fleeing famine, Lang Cang has become their backbone.
"Can you take them with you on the hunt?" Tu Lin looked a little uneasy. After spending these days together, he had a general idea of Lang Cang's personality.
This male orc is very guarded and has a taciturn personality. He is not only taciturn with others, but also with his own kind of cubs.
He wasn't sure if Lang Cang would be willing to take them all on the hunt.
Wolf Cang did not respond to Rabbit Forest's words. The beastmen in the cave subconsciously breathed and looked at Wolf Cang with anticipation.
Lian Lin Baiyan unconsciously rubbed the kitten Xia's paws, waiting for Lang Cang's answer.
They knew Lang Cang's abilities; if he was willing to lead male orcs on a hunt, the chances of catching prey would be very high.
The male orc in the center of the field of vision remained silent for a long time before relenting, "I can take you there, but whether you can catch any prey depends on your skills."
Rabbit Forest's face lit up with joy. "Are you going with Wolf Cang?"
"Of course I want to go!"
"I am coming too!"
That's meat! The orcs have been so busy fleeing that they haven't eaten meat for many days.
Didn't you see how many orcs in the cave turned green with envy when Lang Cang brought in that gray rabbit?
Now Lang Cang actually says he's going to take them hunting.
Only a foolish orc wouldn't go to such a great opportunity!
Even underage male beastmen were eager to join the hunting party.
The beastmen in the cave eagerly awaited Wolf Cang's command.
Wolf Cang surveyed the beastmen in the cave, pondered for a moment, and said, "All adult male beastmen, come with me. Sub-beastmen, follow Rabbit Forest and Cat White to gather resources."
"The old and frail orcs stayed in the cave to look after the cubs."
At this point, Tu Lin added, "How about leaving a few sub-orcs in the cave?"
"Have them look around for any large rocks. We need to polish a larger stone pot."
Polishing a stone pot is a simple task. Orcs are generally very strong, and it is relatively easy for them to carve a dent in a large rock. Even half-grown cubs can do this kind of work.
Wolf Cang turned to look at Rabbit Forest, "Can you start a fire?"
Tu Lin subconsciously shook his head. He was just the leader of a gathering team before. How could he possibly have such an important ability as starting a fire?
Lang Cang tilted his head and asked everyone, "Does anyone here know how to start a fire?"
