Chapter 53 Dilemmas of Choice and Undercurrents
Chapter 53 Dilemmas of Choice and Undercurrents
In the forest, the black-robed woman's suggestion was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, stirring ripples in the hearts of Huanmo and his companions. The watchful gaze of the mysterious eyes hidden beneath the black robes made the atmosphere even more eerie and unpredictable, as if an invisible net was slowly closing in on them.
Huanmo clenched his fists, his gaze shifting between Wanru, his companions, and the woman in black. He knew the difficulty of this choice. On one hand, there was their unwavering pursuit of the truth, the goal they had endured countless hardships for; on the other hand, there was the unknown and potentially deadly danger implied by the woman in black, and the tempting promise of temporary safety. He pondered to himself, "If I give up now, wouldn't all the suffering and battles I've fought be for nothing? But if I continue, can I really bear the unknown consequences? What if I implicate everyone..." Wanru seemed to sense Huanmo's struggle. She gently grasped his hand, her eyes filled with worry and confusion. She didn't know what to do either.
The man in white held a jade flute, his brows furrowed, his expression grave. He, too, was weighing the pros and cons. He, too, had longed to uncover all the secrets along the way, but the appearance of the woman in black and her warning forced him to reassess the situation. Qingwan leaned weakly against a tree trunk, her spiritual energy nearly exhausted. Even thinking seemed difficult; she simply stared blankly at the crowd, awaiting a decision that would ensure everyone's safety. The white tiger lay quietly to one side, its blue eyes still vigilantly scanning its surroundings, seemingly sensing the lurking danger beneath the tense atmosphere.
The man in the green robe stepped forward, cupped his hands in greeting to the woman in the black robe, and said, "Miss, thank you for your help earlier. However, this matter of exploring the secret is of great significance to us, and we are really reluctant to give up easily. We hope that you can reveal more of the secrets of this forest so that we can consider it carefully."
The woman in black robes slightly raised her eyes, gave the man in green robes a cold look, and said, "Hmph, you bunch of fools who don't know your own mortality. This forest hides not only danger, but also power capable of overturning everything. The place indicated on that map is a forbidden zone that even I dare not easily set foot in. Do you think you can uncover the secret unscathed with your meager abilities?"
Her words sent a chill down everyone's spine, and Huanmo couldn't help but ask, "Miss, what kind of power is that? Why is it so dangerous?"
The woman in black robes gave a soft snort and said, "That is a forbidden power from ancient times. Once awakened, this world may fall into chaos. And that map is one of the key clues to unlocking this power. If you continue to pursue it, not only will you be in danger, but you may also bring disaster to the entire world."
Hearing her words, the group exchanged bewildered glances, their shock beyond words. They never imagined that the secret they were seeking concealed such a tremendous crisis.
Just then, the surrounding forest seemed to sense the tense atmosphere, the already dim light becoming even more somber. The branches and leaves trembled in the breeze, rustling softly as if whispering of the forest's unease. The fog grew thicker, like a white behemoth, slowly engulfing everything around them, trapping them in this small area.
Huanmo gazed at the increasingly eerie surroundings, his inner turmoil growing stronger. He looked at his companions and saw the same hesitation and struggle in their eyes. Wanru nestled close to him and whispered, "Huanmo, I'm so scared. Should we listen to her and leave here first?"
Huanmo gently stroked Wanru's hair and comforted her, "Don't be afraid, let's think about it again."
However, just as everyone was lost in thought, the mysterious eyes hidden beneath the black-robed woman's robes suddenly flashed with an eerie light. Immediately afterward, a low, incantation came from the direction of the black-robed woman, but the voice clearly did not originate from her.
The woman in black robes seemed to sense something amiss. She whirled around, her expression changing drastically, and shouted, "Who dares to play tricks on me from behind!"
Before she could react, a black light shot out from behind her, heading straight for the group. Huanmo reacted quickly, pulling Wanru behind him and drawing his sword to try and block the sudden attack. The man in white also hurriedly raised his jade flute, chanting incantations as he cast a defensive spell. The man in green and Qingwan also mobilized their remaining spiritual energy to prepare for the crisis.
The white tiger pounced forward, attempting to block the black light with its body. However, the black light was extremely powerful, and the white tiger was bounced back as soon as it made contact, crashing heavily to the ground with a painful roar.
The moment Huanmo's sword collided with the black light, he felt an immense force surge through him, causing his arm to go numb and almost making him lose his grip on the sword. But he gritted his teeth, desperately resisting the force to prevent it from harming Wanru behind him.
The white-robed man's defensive spells only slightly slowed the black light, but couldn't completely stop it. Just as the black light was about to break through the defenses, at this critical moment, the black-robed woman regained her senses. She quickly began to play her black flute, uttering a series of rapid notes.
As she played her instrument, a black barrier unfolded before them, perfectly blocking the black light that was about to break through their defenses. The black light struck the barrier, producing a deafening roar that seemed to shake the entire forest.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, but their doubts and fears only intensified. The woman in black robes turned around, her face terrifyingly grim. She said coldly, "It seems someone doesn't want you to leave, nor does they want me to take you away. Hmph, who have you offended?"
Huanmo looked bewildered and said, "We don't know either. We were just following the map to explore the secrets. How did we get into this trouble?"
The woman in black robes looked at the group, then at the surrounding forest, and said, "In any case, you are now caught up in a much larger conspiracy. The waters of this forest run far deeper than you imagine."
The man in the green robe frowned and asked, "Young lady, what should we do now? Should we continue following you, or..."
The woman in black robes pondered for a moment and said, "Things have come to this point, and you have no choice. Come with me, and I want to see who's behind this mess, daring to run wild on my turf!"
Upon hearing this, the group exchanged glances and nodded. Although they still harbored doubts about the woman in black, they had no choice but to trust her at this moment. After all, in this perilous forest, they needed someone who could lead them out of their predicament.
Led by the woman in black, the group once again embarked on an unknown journey. As they ventured deeper, the forest environment became increasingly bizarre. The trees grew more and more twisted and grotesque, some even contorting like human bodies, as if enduring immense pain. Black mist would occasionally rise from the ground, emitting a pungent odor that made them want to vomit.
As Huanmo walked, he cautiously observed his surroundings. He wondered to himself, "Who exactly is this woman in black robes? Can she really lead us out of this predicament? And what is the purpose of the person behind this?"
Wanru followed closely behind Huanmo, her small hands still clutching the hem of his clothes, her heart filled with the same doubts and fears. She would occasionally look up at Huanmo, as if she could find some sense of security in him.
As the group cautiously made their way forward, an ancient castle suddenly appeared in the distance. The castle walls were covered in vines and mostly dilapidated, yet their former grandeur was still evident. The castle gates were tightly shut, adorned with strange symbols that added to the mystery of the dim forest environment.
Upon seeing the castle, the woman in black robes suddenly stopped, her expression growing more grave, a hint of surprise and apprehension flashing in her eyes. She muttered to herself, "How could a castle appear here? This is not a good omen."
Confused, everyone looked at the woman in black. Huanmo asked, "Miss, is there something wrong with this castle?"
The woman in black robes looked at everyone and slowly said, "This castle is an ancient relic, sealed with many unknown evil forces. Ordinary people dare not approach it, but now it has appeared on our only way. There must be something fishy about this."
Hearing her words, everyone's hearts tightened again. They gazed at the ancient and mysterious castle, filled with both curiosity and fear.
Just as everyone was staring blankly at the castle, the castle gates suddenly opened slowly, and a powerful suction force came out from inside, trying to pull everyone in.
Huanmo instinctively grabbed Wanru's hand and shouted, "Everyone be careful!"
Everyone tried to resist the suction force by casting spells or using their own strength, but the suction force was too strong, and their resistance seemed insignificant.
Soon, everyone was sucked into the castle by that suction force.
Deep within the castle, a pair of blood-red eyes silently watched the direction they were sucked in, their eyes gleaming with greed and ferocity, as if awaiting a sumptuous feast.
