Chapter 19 Black Car
Chapter 19 Black Car
An hour later, Du Fan was still in the long underground passage, which was narrow and seemed to have no end.
Fortunately, there was air in the passage, and the stone walls on both sides were made of a special material that emitted a faint light, allowing Du Fan to pass through smoothly without suffocating or bumping into the stone walls.
Du Fan didn't know how long he had been walking, but estimated it had been more than half a day. He decided to stop and rest for a while, so he casually rested his hands on the stone wall to one side.
But when his hand touched the stone wall, a look of doubt appeared on his face, and then he kept patting the spot and the surrounding area.
"The stone walls here are very thin; there must be another cave behind it," Du Fan concluded.
"Forget it, now is not the time to be curious." He shook his head, ignored it, took out the dry rations given to him by the family head before he left, took two bites, and continued on his way, quickening his pace.
About half a day later, the passage began to slope upwards, and Du Fan roused himself and strode forward.
"They're finally out!"
Du Fan was standing in a forest, the very forest he had predicted, already more than ten miles from Tianxiang City.
He took a deep breath, stretched, and after determining his direction, he left without hesitation.
Several hours later, Du Fan bent down and picked a few leaves from a plant. Just as he was about to get up and leave, a sinister laugh suddenly rang out, giving Du Fan the feeling of being stared at by a wild beast, which made his scalp tingle instantly.
"Manager Du, where are you going?"
A figure in white appeared, with long hair flowing down his shoulders, handsome features, and an extraordinary temperament. Every gesture he made was perfect. He was none other than Wu Hao, the pride of the Zishan Sect!
Du Fan was surprised to see this person, but he calmed down and stared directly at him.
"So it's you, Master. I was entrusted by my family head to go to Licheng to purchase some items." Du Fan bowed slightly, neither humble nor arrogant, and said calmly without any panic.
"Purchasing? Forget it. Normally I might play along with you, but I don't have the time today. I originally planned to make you wish you were dead when we met again, but don't worry, I'll give you a quick death because I have important business to attend to. You don't know, but what I hate most about you isn't the day you spied on my secrets, nor is it how you tricked me with that broken dagger, but the way that little bitch Yao Ruoxi looked at you, and the way she pleaded for you in front of me!"
"You are not worthy to mention Ruoxi!" Du Fan's expression instantly darkened, and his words were icy.
"What did you say? How dare a mere mortal spout such nonsense before me? Die!"
Wu Hao was furious, his eyes flashing with ferocity. With a wave of his white robes, a fireball over ten feet in size flashed out and blasted towards Du Fan. A scorching heat instantly filled the surrounding void, accompanied by the sound of air being torn apart. Its power surpassed that of any fire-attribute talisman Du Fan had ever seen.
Despair was evident in Du Fan's eyes, but not fear. He knew he had no chance of survival. Not to mention this unfathomable prodigy of the Purple Mountain Sect, even a quasi-Qi Refining cultivator could kill him with a flick of a finger. Therefore, he did not resist but calmly closed his eyes.
A deafening roar erupted, and the resulting shockwave instantly lifted Du Fan, who had his eyes closed, flying him ten feet away before crashing heavily to the ground.
The moment he landed, Du Fan felt a violent tremor throughout his body, and suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood. He looked up in surprise at what lay ahead.
"Who are you?" Wu Hao asked, his face showing surprise and doubt, and a serious expression on his face.
At this moment, standing between Wu Hao and Du Fan was a man dressed in the attire of a steward of the Yao family. He had triangular eyes, a mustache, pointed ears, and monkey-like cheeks. He was none other than Liu Neng, the steward of the Yao family.
"Steward Du, I came here on the orders of the patriarch to rescue you, but I have always disliked you. If you don't leave now, when will you?" Liu Neng said calmly, his expression no longer showing his usual worldly and meanness, but revealing a hint of arrogance.
Du Fan stood up unsteadily, without saying much or uttering any unnecessary words, and turned to leave.
……
Four days later, Du Fan finally emerged from the southern edge of the jungle. The shockwave caused by the spells cast by Wu Hao and Liu Neng that day had caused some internal injuries to Du Fan, but he had recovered thanks to the healing properties of the relevant medicinal plants.
Three days later, the outline of a magnificent city came into Du Fan's view.
Du Fan had seen this city in the maps and books of the Yao family before. It was a large city in the Tianxiang Kingdom, called Li City.
Licheng is a place rich in furs, and many high-ranking officials and even the royal family often send people here to purchase furs to make clothing. There are also many foreign merchants coming and going from this city, so its economy is exceptionally developed and it is showing a trend of becoming the second largest city in Tianxiang Kingdom.
However, Du Fan had neither the time nor the interest to care about these things. He stepped directly into the city and appeared in a luxurious restaurant.
Just as Du Fan had told Yao Ruoxi and the other girl a dozen days ago, they were so poor that all they had left was money.
After a hearty meal, Du Fan inquired about the carriage and horse shop from the waiter, and bought plenty of braised beef and steamed buns to pack before leaving the restaurant and heading straight to a carriage and horse shop in Licheng.
As he passed a clothing store, Du Fan hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. When he came out, he had changed into an extremely ordinary gray robe.
After passing two main roads and several alleys, he turned into a spacious courtyard filled with carriages.
"Sir, I am the manager of this carriage and horse company. Where are you going?"
An elderly man in black saw Du Fan enter the courtyard and quickly went up to greet him.
"Do you have any carriages going to Starfire Town?" Du Fan asked without hesitation.
"But is it Xinghuo Town, a major military town on the northern border of Huoyu Kingdom?" The old man in black asked in surprise, seeking confirmation.
"That's right, that's the place. Doesn't your carriage company have carriages on this route?" Du Fan frowned.
"No, it's just that this place is quite far away and is in another country's territory, so the cost is quite high," the old man explained with a slight smile, stroking his beard.
"Silver is no problem, name your price." Du Fan seemed quite wealthy and powerful.
These words immediately made the old man in black beam with joy, and he held up five fingers, saying, "Five taels of silver."
"No problem."
Du Fan didn't care at all, but when he reached for the money, his expression became quite interesting. His money bag was gone.
"Damn, it got stolen!" A thought instantly flashed through Du Fan's mind.
The steward in black was a seasoned veteran who had been navigating the world for many years. He only needed to glance at Du Fan to guess the situation pretty accurately.
"Sir, has your purse been stolen? Although Licheng is economically developed, it's a place where all sorts of people mingle and things can get chaotic. You should be careful when you go out in the future. Why don't you go back and get some silver? We have a carriage service every day, so you don't need to worry." The old man in black had a strange glint in his eyes, but his attitude was still quite friendly as he spoke.
Du Fan had no way of going back to get the silver, so he had no choice but to rummage through his clothes. In the end, he found a small silver ingot, worth one tael, in the bag of packed food.
"I can't go back to get more. I only have one tael of silver on me right now. Can I borrow the rest? I have a friend in Xinghuo Town who will pay me back then," Du Fan coughed and shamelessly asked.
The old man in black smiled, shook his head, and remained silent.
"Brother, are you heading to Starfire Town?"
Just as Du Fan was feeling anxious and at a loss, a voice rang out beside him at the right time.
Du Fan was taken aback and turned his head to see a young man. The man's appearance was fairly decent, but his smile seemed somewhat lewd.
"Who are you?" Du Fan asked, somewhat puzzled.
"My name is Liu Wei, you can call me Xiao Liu. If you're going to Xinghuo Town, I have a carriage here that's about to depart. It only costs one tael of silver." Liu Wei was very enthusiastic and strongly recommended his carriage.
"Is this manager someone from your car dealership?" Du Fan didn't answer immediately, but turned to ask the old man in black.
"Ahem... This gentleman is not from my car dealership. You may decide for yourself. I hope we will have the opportunity to cooperate again in the future. I have some other matters to attend to, so I will have to take my leave for now." The old man in black looked at Liu Wei with a strange expression, but being the slippery man he was, he naturally wouldn't interfere. After speaking, he gave a slight bow and left.
"It's probably an unlicensed taxi," Du Fan realized instantly.
"Forget it, as long as I can get to Xinghuo Town, none of this matters." Du Fan made up his mind.
"Brother Liu, thank you for your trouble." Du Fan handed the last tael of silver to Liu Wei.
"Alright, come with me." Liu Wei's face lit up with a smile after receiving the money, along with a hint of smugness.
……
Several hours later, the carriage sped along the official road. Inside, besides Du Fan, there were more than a dozen other people, including men, women, and children, while Liu Wei drove the carriage from the outside.
Two weeks later, the carriage stopped at a crossroads in the countryside.
"Brother Du, could you come out for a moment? I want to discuss something with you," Liu Wei called out loudly from outside the car.
Du Fan was surprised, but he still got out of the car.
"Brother Du, we've already left the territory of Tianxiang Kingdom. You see, if we continue south along this road, we'll enter the territory of Huoyu Kingdom, where Xinghuo Town is located. To the east is Liao Kingdom, which is our destination. Hehe, shouldn't you get off the carriage now, or we'll just get further and further away?" Liu Wei chuckled, appearing harmless and seemingly always thinking of Du Fan's best interests.
"What? You mean you have no intention of going to Xinghuo Town at all, and are going to abandon me in this desolate place?" Du Fan was furious.
"Brother Du, Brother Du! The word 'lost' sounds too awful, too awful. I'm just discussing this with you. If you don't want to, you can continue on your journey with us. Actually, a good man's ambition lies in all directions. Why must we go to Xinghuo Town? Don't you think so? Hehe, hehe..." Liu Wei chuckled, without blushing, and said something that almost made Du Fan vomit blood.
"Damn it!" Du Fan suddenly raised a middle finger, turned around and left, his rambling voice still echoing behind him.
"This little guy is interesting. Judging from his appearance, he will have a momentous opportunity soon, but this opportunity... I can't see through it. It seems to belong to a world apart..." After Du Fan disappeared into the distance, Liu Wei put away his playful smile, and hesitation and struggle flashed across his face.
"Forget it, I can't handle such good fortune. I'll just go my own way in life."
Liu Wei took a deep breath, made a decision, and his last bit of struggle disappeared. He then boarded the carriage again.
"Life's journey is tough... Let's go!"
If Du Fan were to see the scene inside the carriage now, he would be horrified. There was no one left in the carriage!
