Chapter 18 Changing Positions
Chapter 18 Changing Positions
The day for announcing the results has arrived.
Xie Huai stood on the podium, holding a stack of report cards in his hand, his glasses reflecting the light.
He was a homeroom teacher who was transferred here this semester. I heard that he used to teach junior high school, but somehow he was transferred to elementary school.
Bald, in his fifties, he teaches in a very rigid and methodical manner. If anyone dares to daydream in class, he can stare at you for the entire lesson.
No one in the class was afraid of him.
"Quiet down."
Xie Huai spoke, and the classroom fell silent instantly.
He began reading out his grades.
One name after another, one score after another.
Some people lowered their heads, some secretly wiped away tears, and some breathed a sigh of relief after hearing their scores.
"Song Huan".
Song Huan raised her head.
"Chinese 97, Math 96, English 96, Total score 289, Second in the class, Second in the whole school."
The classroom was silent for two seconds, then erupted.
"How many?!"
"289?! Second in the entire school?!"
"Doesn't he usually sleep all day?"
"I saw him looking out the window during class last time, and he got called on by Teacher Xie..."
Song Huan felt the gazes coming from all directions—some shocked, some doubtful, and some admiring.
The gaze from the side was the most intense.
He turned his head and saw Xiao Yunqing staring at him with her eyes wide open.
[289?!]
[He usually doesn't do his homework, and he either sleeps or looks out the window in class, so how did he get such a high score?!]
Song Huan chuckled and leaned closer to whisper, "Envious, aren't you? But that's talent."
Xiao Yunqing was so angry that she stomped on his foot under the table.
But she was actually relieved.
[With such a high score, the teacher won't transfer him...]
Upon hearing this, Song Huan was taken aback, while Xiao Yunqing had already turned her head away happily.
Xie Huai continued reading.
"Xiao Yunqing".
Xiao Yunqing immediately sat up straight.
"Chinese 99, Math 97, English 95, Total Score 291, First in the class, First in the whole school."
The class reacted calmly.
No one was surprised.
Since first grade, Xiao Yunqing had always been first in every exam, so everyone was used to it.
Xie Huai pushed up his glasses, a rare look of satisfaction on his face.
"Xiao Yunqing has once again ranked first in the entire school. I hope everyone can learn from her."
Xiao Yunqing held the report card, her smile impossible to hide.
She turned her head, held up the report card in front of Song Huan, and looked smug.
That expression clearly said: Look, I'm number one!
Song Huan cooperated by revealing a hint of envy.
"That's amazing."
Xiao Yunqing became even more smug, and her ponytail stood up straight.
Looking at her like that, Song Huan felt that it was worth it to control her score and get second place.
……
Next is the time to arrange seating.
This is Xie Huai's old rule.
After each major exam, students are ranked according to their scores and then choose their own seats.
Undoubtedly, this method is full of flaws.
Those with good grades squeeze into the front row, while those with poor grades huddle in the back. Those who are nearsighted can't get a good seat and can only stare blankly.
But in this era, this practice seems to be the mainstream.
Moreover, at this time, teachers held a high position, so even if parents had opinions, they could only keep them to themselves and would not speak out.
Xie Huai stood on the podium and adjusted his glasses.
"As per the old rules, we'll start with the first place winner. Xiao Yunqing."
Xiao Yunqing stood up.
She glanced at the seats in the classroom and said, "Teacher, my current seat is fine; I don't need to change."
Xie Huai nodded and made a note in his notebook.
"Okay. Next, Song Huan."
Just as Song Huan was about to stand up, she suddenly felt a sharp gaze.
He turned his head and looked.
Xiao Yunqing was staring at him, her eyes unblinking.
How to describe that look in his eyes?
It's a bit like saying, "Try changing seats if you dare."
Song Huan opened her mouth.
He wanted to sit in the back row by the window.
That is the hometown of the king, a blessed land that countless time travelers have proven with their lives.
But after looking into Xiao Yunqing's eyes and then at the score sheet with 291 points in her hand, he finally chickened out.
"Teacher, I don't want to change it either."
Xiao Yunqing immediately looked away, lowered her head, and pretended to be looking at the report card.
But her inner thoughts had already drifted over.
[No change! No change! No change!]
[It's my deskmate again!!]
Upon hearing this, Song Huan's regret suddenly vanished.
Xie Huai glanced at Song Huan.
He vaguely remembered this student.
He doesn't pay attention in class, he's either sleeping or looking out the window, and occasionally he's even been reported by other teachers for "harassing his deskmate".
But the results speak for themselves: second in the class and second in the whole school.
He couldn't be bothered to care.
"Okay, that's settled then. Next, Wang Yang..."
Xie Huai began arranging seats for the other students.
Song Huan sat in her seat, watching her classmates stand up one by one to choose their seats. Some of them were happy to find their favorite seats, while others were disappointed and had to sit in the back row.
He looked away and glanced to the side.
Xiao Yunqing was looking down and fiddling with the report card, folding it up and unfolding it again.
Sunlight streamed in through the window and fell on her face.
She seemed to sense that he was watching her, and looked up.
"What are you looking at?"
"It's nothing."
Xiao Yunqing glanced at him suspiciously, then lowered her head again.
After a while, she whispered:
"You did well on the test this time."
Song Huan smiled.
"It's alright, but not as good as the top student in the whole school."
Xiao Yunqing felt a little smug. "Good to know."
She paused, then added, "Next time, I'll still be number one next time."
Song Huan looked into her bright eyes and nodded.
"Okay, I'll wait."
Xiao Yunqing was satisfied and continued folding her report cards.
Song Huan leaned back in her chair, looking out the window.
The window seats in the back row are indeed quite good; there's plenty of sunlight, a nice view, and you can even see the playground.
But this position is not bad either.
With the top student in the entire school sitting right next to me, what else is there to choose from?
……
When school was over, the two walked out of the school gate together.
Xiao Yunqing was in a particularly good mood today, and she walked with a swagger.
"Song Huan, how did you get such a high score this time?"
"I already said, it's talent."
"Don't be ridiculous," Xiao Yunqing said, unconvinced. "Did you secretly study?"
Song Huan thought for a moment.
He didn't really study much; he just listened to her thoughts during the exam and did the questions himself.
But I can't say that.
"Maybe it's just luck. You know, I've always been very lucky."
Xiao Yunqing pursed her lips and didn't ask any further questions.
After taking a few steps, she spoke again.
"Um, thank you."
Song Huan was stunned for a moment.
"What are you thanking me for?"
"That's right, they didn't change seats."
After Xiao Yunqing finished speaking, she quickened her pace and walked forward, not wanting him to see her expression.
Song Huan stood there, watching her back.
Her ponytail swayed back and forth, and her steps were as light as a rabbit's.
He smiled and quickly caught up with him.
"Xiao Yunqing".
"what?"
"Will you bring me milk again tomorrow?"
Xiao Yunqing paused for a moment, then continued walking.
"We'll see how you behave, you brat."
